Introduction to Our Early Years Curriculum

Our curriculum is designed in alignment with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, ensuring a high-quality, child-centered approach to early education. Using Development Matters as a guide, we provide rich learning experiences that support children’s development through play, exploration, and meaningful interactions.

The EYFS sets out seven areas of learning and development, which are divided into prime areas—Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social, and Emotional Development—and specific areas—Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, and Expressive Arts and Design. These areas work together to foster well-rounded growth in each child.

Development Matters acts as a non-statutory guide to help practitioners create an engaging and inclusive learning environment. It emphasises the importance of high-quality adult interactions, enabling environments, and a balance between child-led and adult-initiated activities.

Through our curriculum, we aim to nurture children’s curiosity, confidence, and independence, ensuring they develop the foundational skills needed for their next stage of learning. We recognise that each child is unique, and we tailor our approach to meet their individual needs, promoting a love for learning in a safe and supportive setting.

Infants (3 months – 2 years)

At this stage in a child’s life, they rely on learning through their five senses, using their hands to explore their surroundings. They begin to develop trust, begin to socialise through smiling. As they begin to communicate their needs, children develop self-confidence, they begin to understand that words have meaning and people will respond to their sounds. Physical movement consists of sitting, crawling and learning to transfer things from one hand to another.

Toddlers ( 2-3 years)

At this age, children explore their environment more and are increasingly purposeful to find the meaning in events, objects and words as they attempt to discover how the world around them works. They develop a sense of identity and self and begin to realise their own individuality. They understand the power of words and the importance of written words and develop a vocabulary. Children are learning as they discover through physical development. Self confidence develops as motor skills become better. Children enjoy repetition such as dumping and filling and eye co- ordination is developing.

Pre-schoolers (3-5 years)

Go beyond academics to promote social and emotional development, creativity, and positive approaches to learning while encouraging a preschooler’s playfulness. Compliance with the curriculum of EYFS helps children achieve the readiness skills needed for school.
