New Year, Best Start: How to Choose the Right Nursery in London in 2026
Happy New Year! January is a wonderful time for many parents to start thinking about nurseries for their children. Whether your little one is 3 months, 2 years, or about to 3 years old, selecting the optimal setting for 2026 can be daunting as there are so many options. Here’s a practical guide to help you find a nursery that suits your family the best.
1. Start with Quality & Ofsted
What you really want to do first is check the latest Ofsted report (available via gov.uk), which is the one place that gives you an unbiased review about the nursery.
Outstanding or Good ratings are a strong indicator of quality. Ratings give you an idea, but check the full report, especially what they say about the children’s happiness, their levels of engagement, progression, and safety.
Use parental reviews on other sites to get an idea of the day-to-day functioning of the nursery.
2. Consider the Location & Your Daily Routine
Pick a place that suits your daily life:
- Close to home for short morning routines
- Close to work if you commute
- By your older sibling’s school for quick drop-off
Increasingly, families like the combination of primary schools and attached nurseries – it often simplifies the transition to Reception for kids.
3. Tailor the Type of Nursery to Your Child
There are different types of nurseries:
- Mostly play-based (most common and best for younger ages)
- More structured activities
- Bilingual
- Nature/outdoor
- Creative or music
How does your child like to explore? Do they prefer free exploration or do they need to be tuned in a little more?
4. Check the Environment & Outdoor Space
Good nurseries feel warm, safe and exciting. Look for:
- Plenty of natural light
- Big, clean, inviting areas
- Outside space (very important for movement and mental health)
- Organized, clean, age-appropriate toys and materials
Many places now make outdoor play a priority, and do it regardless of the weather.
5. Staff & Atmosphere
The people make the biggest difference. Ask:
- Staff to child ratio (legal minimums are 1:3 for under 2s, 1:4 for 2s, 1:8 for 3-4s)
- How long the staff tends to stay (low turnover is good)
- Staff qualifications and training
Also pay attention to how the staff interact with the children. Do they use the children’s names, and pay attention to how they speak?
6. Communication & Settling In
A good nursery will have a settling-in procedure (sometimes a few short visits). They should also keep you updated – a lot use apps like Famly to share daily photos and notes.
7. Quick Action Plan for 2026
Book visits as early as you can. Visit 3–5 of these settings and trust your instinct: do the kids seem happy? Do the staff look calm and genuinely busy?
Discuss with current parents to get constructive critique.
Send your application as early as you can – some nurseries will require you to register months (even up to a year) in advance.
Selecting a nursery for your child is one of the most defining moments for you as a parent. 2026 will have more options with a guaranteed higher standard of places. You can afford to take your time with this decision, visit sufficient places, and select the setting that will keep your child safe, cherished, and eager to learn daily.
Best wishes for a great beginning to the new year!
